QUESTION 7
Can A Believer Truly Walk In Freedom?
Understanding the difference between being set free by Jesus Christ and learning to walk in that freedom every day.
01
Jesus Christ Truly Set Us Free
Before we can understand how to walk in freedom, we first need to understand what Jesus Christ actually made available through His death and resurrection.
When Jesus willingly gave His life on the cross, He did far more than make forgiveness possible. He broke the power of sin, defeated the kingdom of darkness, removed our condemnation, and opened the door for us to become children of God. Everything necessary for our salvation and new life was accomplished through Him.
Jesus said in John 8:36 (NLT), “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”
Notice that Jesus didn’t say we might become free or that freedom would depend on our performance. He declared that those whom He sets free are truly free. That freedom isn’t based on our emotions, our past, or our ability to live perfectly. It rests entirely upon what He accomplished.
Paul tells us in Colossians 1:13-14 that through Jesus Christ, our Heavenly Father has purchased our freedom and forgiven our sins. That’s an incredible picture of His love and grace. God didn’t simply rescue us from something; He rescued us for something. He brought us into His family, gave us a new identity in Christ, and made available everything we need to live a life that honors Him.
Freedom isn't something you earn because you've been “good enough.” It isn't a prize for Christians who have been walking with the Lord for twenty years. Freedom is a gift of God’s grace. Jesus Christ paid for it, and we receive it by faith.
Jesus Christ has already done what only He could do. But each day, we're invited to respond to what He has already accomplished. Will we go back to the same lies, the same fears, the same thinking that kept us bound? Or will we keep believing what God says, even when our feelings are trying to pull us in another direction?
Can a believer truly walk in freedom? Absolutely. Not because we are strong enough to free ourselves, but because Jesus Christ has already secured that freedom through His death and resurrection. So the question isn't whether freedom is possible. The question is whether we're willing to learn how to walk in what He has already made available. Our part is to keep saying “yes” to Him. To keep choosing His truth over the lies. To keep walking, even when we're still growing. That's the journey every believer is invited to take.
Everything we discuss from this point forward rests on this unshakable foundation: Jesus Christ has already secured our freedom. The Christian life is not about trying to earn what He has already given us. It is about learning, through the Holy Spirit, to walk in the freedom that is already ours because of Him.
So if the Son sets you free,
you are truly free.”
JOHN 8:36 (NLT)
The apostle Paul explains this remarkable truth:
“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.”
ROMANS 8:1-2 (NLT)
“For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”
COLOSSIANS 1:13-14 (NLT)
“So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.”
GALATIANS 5:1 (NLT)
Notice, Paul didn't say, “Try to become free.”
He said, “Stay free.”
Freedom isn't just something Jesus gives you one day. It's something you learn to live in every day.
These verses remind us that this freedom that Jesus Christ gives us is not something we achieve through our own effort. He accomplished it for us through His finished work on the cross. When we place our faith in Him, our standing before God changes completely. We are no longer condemned because our sins have been forgiven, and we have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God’s dear Son.

02
Why Do Believers Still Struggle?
When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, something extraordinary happens. We become a new creation. Our human spirit is made alive in Christ, and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. Our relationship with God is restored, and our identity is forever changed.
What doesn’t happen is an instant transformation of the soul.
Our minds have been shaped by years of experiences, beliefs, hurts, fears, and ways of thinking that don’t simply disappear the moment we’re saved. While our spirit has been made new, our soul is still being transformed as the Holy Spirit renews our minds through God’s Word.
This is why believers can genuinely love the Lord while still finding themselves struggling with old thought patterns, unhealthy reactions, and habits that were formed long before they came to Christ.
The Bible also reminds us that there is an ongoing conflict between the desires of the flesh and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:17 (NLT) says, “The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.” Until we are with the Lord, that battle remains a reality for every believer.
At the same time, we must remember that we have an enemy who seeks to deceive us and keep us from walking in the freedom Jesus Christ has already secured. Spiritual warfare is real, but it does not change what Christ accomplished on the cross. Through His Word, the Holy Spirit, and the authority we have in Christ, God has provided everything we need to stand firm and continue growing in freedom.
This is why renewing the mind is so important. As our thinking comes into agreement with God’s truth, our lives begin reflecting the freedom that already belongs to us through Jesus Christ.

Freedom Leads to Purpose—A Life That Glorifies God
God never intended for freedom to be the finish line. Freedom is the beginning of a new way of living. It’s the doorway into a life that glorifies Him.
As the Holy Spirit continues His work within us, we become less concerned with simply getting through each day and more concerned with honoring God in the way we live. Our desires begin changing. We want to know Him more deeply. We want our lives to reflect the character of Jesus Christ. We begin looking for opportunities to love others, serve faithfully, and bear fruit that brings glory to God.
The things that once consumed our thoughts and controlled our decisions no longer occupy the same place in our hearts. Instead of being controlled by fear, resentment, insecurity, or the opinions of others, we become increasingly available for God to use us however He chooses.
That doesn’t mean we’ve reached perfection. It means we’ve become willing. And a willing heart is a powerful instrument in the hands of God.
Jesus reminds us why this matters in John 15:8 (NLT), “When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.” The Christian life has never been about trying to become someone important. It’s about becoming more like Jesus Christ. As we continue walking in the freedom He has given us, the Holy Spirit produces fruit that blesses others. He strengthens the body of Christ and brings glory to our Heavenly Father.
Freedom isn’t simply about breaking chains. It’s about becoming available to God. As we surrender more of ourselves to Him, we discover that the life we once longed for is found not in following our own way, but in joyfully walking in God's Will.
Jesus Christ didn't simply come to forgive our sins. He came to set us free. Yet many believers still wonder why the Christian life sometimes feels like a battle. This study explores the difference between what Christ has already accomplished and how the Holy Spirit teaches us to live in that freedom each day.
QUESTIONS THAT LEAD TO TRANSFORMATION
