QUESTION 2

WHAT KEEPS SHAPING ME

BENEATH THE SURFACE?

Exploring Hidden Wounds, Fear, Rejection, Emotional Patterns, And Internal Shaping

Many people spend years trying to change behaviors without ever really understanding what is driving those behaviors beneath the surface.

They focus on the reaction. The habit. The symptom. But rarely do they slow down long enough to ask a deeper question: What is shaping me?

When we talk about what is “shaping us,” we’re talking about the influences that affect how we think, respond, believe, feel, relate to others, and see ourselves. Every experience leaves an imprint somewhere. Some experiences help us grow in healthy ways. Others leave wounds, fears, beliefs, and internal patterns that continue affecting our lives long after the original event has passed.

Most people spend their energy fighting what they can see while never addressing what has been shaping them beneath the surface all along.

A person may struggle with anger, but anger is often not the root issue. Another may wrestle with control, yet control is usually not the root either. The same can be true for anxiety, people-pleasing, emotional withdrawal, trust issues, addiction, insecurity, fear, and unhealthy relationship patterns. These struggles are often outward expressions of something much deeper that has been forming within the soul for years.

Jesus Himself tells us in Luke 6:45 (NLT), “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.”

What is happening beneath the surface eventually shows up above it.

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

HEBREWS 4:12 (NLT)

The Root Beneath The Struggle

A tree does not become unhealthy because of its leaves. The leaves simply reveal the problem that is happening at the root.

Many people spend years fighting the leaves while ignoring the root.

They battle the anger but never address the wound. They wrestle with the fear but never confront the lie feeding it. They try to control their reactions while never dealing with the rejection, abandonment, disappointment, trauma, or unhealthy beliefs that helped create those reactions in the first place.

What remains buried in the soul rarely stays hidden. Sooner or later it finds its way into our thoughts, emotions, choices, relationships, and behaviors.

Some people were shaped by rejection that convinced them they were not enough. Others were shaped by abandonment that left them expecting people to leave. Some were deeply affected by criticism, betrayal, trauma, fear, or disappointment. Others grew up in environments where survival became more important than emotional health. The wound may have happened years ago, but the imprint it left behind continued shaping how they viewed themselves and the world around them.

Over time, those experiences begin forming internal patterns that feel normal simply because they have been there so long. People begin expecting rejection before it happens. They assume others will leave. Trust becomes difficult. Walls go up. Vulnerability feels unsafe. Control increases. Emotional distance grows.

Not because they want life to be that way, but because the soul learned how to protect itself.

The difficulty is that what once protected us from pain can also prevent us from experiencing healing.

The problem is that the soul was never created to lead us. It was never designed to be our compass, our source of truth, or our primary guide. When wounds, fear, rejection, and past experiences begin directing our decisions, reactions, and beliefs, we can find ourselves living from self-protection rather than from the truth of God's Word and the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

PROVERBS 4:23(NLT)

When The Holy Spirit Reveals What Has Been Shaping You

For believers, it is important to understand that these influences are not shaping the recreated human spirit. The spirit was made brand new through Jesus Christ and is now the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. The shaping happens primarily within the soul—the mind, will, emotions, beliefs, memories, and internal patterns that are still being renewed through God's Word and the work of the Holy Spirit.

This is where the Holy Spirit begins working beneath the surface. God is not interested in simply managing symptoms. He wants to heal what produced them.

Psalm 139:23–24 (NLT) says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends You, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”

David is inviting God into places he cannot fully see or understand on his own. More often than not, that is where healing begins.

The Holy Spirit uncovers what has been hidden. He brings unhealthy agreements into the light. He exposes false identities and confronts fears that have been influencing us for so long we no longer recognize them as fear. He speaks truth into places that have been quietly shaping our thoughts, emotions, reactions, and beliefs for years.

And even though that process can feel uncomfortable, it is not evidence of rejection. It is evidence of love.

God reveals in order to heal. He exposes in order to restore. He confronts in order to transform.

Because Jesus Christ did not come merely to adjust behavior. He came to restore the whole person from the inside out.

That is why soul work matters. Healing is not about becoming obsessed with the past. It is about allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal what has been influencing us beneath the surface so it can finally be brought into the light of God's truth. The goal is not behavior modification. The goal is transformation.

The more the soul comes into agreement with what God says is true, the more freedom, healing, stability, and spiritual maturity begin to emerge. What has been shaping you no longer has to continue shaping you when it is surrendered to Jesus Christ. ■

QUESTIONS THAT LEAD TO TRANSFORMATION

Every healing journey begins with honest questions. The Holy Spirit brings truth, wisdom, revelation, and understanding as we surrender the inward places of our lives to Jesus Christ.
