QUESTION 6
What Does It Mean to Renew the Mind?
Discovering how God heals beyond the pain by restoring, renewing, strengthening, and drawing us closer to Himself.

WHAT IS RENEWING THE MIND?
Renewing the mind is the ongoing work of bringing our thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and ways of seeing life into agreement with God's truth. It isn't simply learning more Bible verses or trying harder to think positive thoughts. It is the Holy Spirit using God's Word to expose lies we've believed, replace them with the truth, and gradually transform the way we think so that our lives begin reflecting the character of Jesus Christ.
That doesn't mean God is trying to erase your personality or turn you into someone you're not. He isn't looking for robots who blindly obey without understanding or relationship. God created each of us with unique personalities, gifts, interests, and ways of expressing His image. Renewing the mind doesn't destroy who He created you to be. It removes the lies, fears, unhealthy beliefs, and distorted ways of thinking that keep you from becoming who He created you to be.
You might ask, "Why would my mind need renewing if God created me?"
God didn't create our minds to think independently of Him. He created us to know Him and see life through His truth. But after sin entered the world, every one of us began learning from a broken world. From childhood, we were shaped by our families, experiences, disappointments, fears, culture, and the messages repeated to us over and over again. Some of what we learned was true, but much of it wasn't. Over time, those beliefs formed patterns of thinking that often stand in opposition to God's Word. That's why our minds need to be renewed. The good news is that God doesn't leave us trapped in those old ways of thinking. Through His Word and the work of the Holy Spirit, He patiently teaches us to think differently so we can live differently.
Think of it this way. If you've ever looked through a dirty window, the problem isn't what's on the other side. It’s what's covering the glass. Renewing the mind is how God cleans the window. He isn't changing reality. He's helping us see Him, ourselves, and the world more clearly through His truth.
God never forces transformation on us. He invites us into it. Every day we choose whether we'll continue believing our old way of thinking or trust what His Word says instead. The Holy Spirit teaches us, convicts us, and reveals truth, but He never overrides our will. Renewing the mind is a partnership. God faithfully provides His truth through His Word, and the Holy Spirit faithfully supplies the power to change. We respond by surrendering our thoughts to Him one decision at a time.

Romans 12:2 tells us to “let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” Most believers in Jesus Christ have heard that verse many times, yet many of us still find ourselves wrestling with the same fears, insecurities, discouragements, and emotional reactions year after year.
We love Jesus Christ. We read God’s Word. We pray and seek His Will for our lives. So why do some of those old ways of thinking seem so difficult to overcome?
The reason is that old ways of thinking are often deeply rooted. They weren’t formed overnight, and they usually aren’t replaced overnight either. Long before we came to Christ, our minds were shaped by our families, experiences, disappointments, fears, successes, failures, culture, and the messages repeated to us over and over again. Some of what we learned was true, but much of it wasn’t. Over time, those experiences taught us conclusions about ourselves, other people, and even God. They shaped what we believe we deserve, what we should fear, what we can expect from others, and even what we assume will always repeat itself.
When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, our spirit is made new, but our minds are still learning to agree with God’s truth instead of the conclusions we’ve carried for years. We may know what Scripture says, yet still expect rejection because we’ve experienced rejection. We may know God is faithful, yet still expect disappointment because that’s what life has taught us. We may know we are loved by God, yet continue struggling with feelings of unworthiness because those old patterns of thinking have become deeply familiar.
This is why renewing the mind is so much more than gaining biblical knowledge. God’s Word certainly teaches us the truth, but the Holy Spirit also applies that truth to the deepest places of our hearts. He brings His light into the areas where wrong conclusions have taken root.
The Holy Spirit is not only correcting information in us. He is healing interpretation in us.
He is renewing how we see God, how we see others, and how we see ourselves until our inner agreement begins to line up with His truth instead of our past experiences.
Renewing the mind isn’t simply about feeling better or thinking healthier. It’s about becoming people who increasingly come into agreement with God, respond to Him in faith, and participate in what He desires to accomplish through our lives. As our thinking comes into alignment with His truth, our choices begin to change, our faith grows stronger, and we become more available to the work He desires to do in and through us.
That is where real transformation begins.
Understanding Why We Still Struggle With Old Ways
of Thinking

When God's Truth Meets Our Inner Reality
Jesus Christ tells us that His words are spirit and life. Yet if we’re honest, many of us have read God’s promises while feeling something completely different on the inside. Romans 15:13 (NLT) says, “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Knowing that God is the Source of hope and that He desires to fill us with joy and peace should bring tremendous comfort and confidence to our lives. Yet many believers still struggle with fear, discouragement, uncertainty, and old ways of thinking that seem difficult to overcome.
That doesn’t mean God’s promises have failed. Often, it means His truth is still making its way into places where old conclusions have been living for years. Those conclusions shape more than we realize. Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” What we truly believe influences how we see ourselves, how we respond to situations, what we expect from God, and even how we interpret His promises. We may know what Scripture says, yet still find ourselves reacting from fear, rejection, insecurity, or disappointments we’ve carried for years.
This is where the Holy Spirit does His beautiful work. He lovingly brings those hidden places into the light, not to condemn us, but to heal us. He reveals the areas where our thinking has drifted away from God’s truth and patiently teaches us to see them from the Father’s perspective.
Until God’s truth reaches the place where the lie has been operating, information alone cannot produce lasting transformation.
That is why Jesus said in John 8:31–32 (NKJV), “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Freedom comes as we continue abiding in His Word and allow His truth to reach the deeper places of our hearts. There, Jesus Christ challenges the conclusions we’ve accepted, replaces them with what is true, and teaches us to live from His perspective instead of our past experiences.
Renewing the mind is not about becoming someone else. It is about becoming who God created you to be in Jesus Christ. As we continue walking with Him, the Holy Spirit faithfully renews our minds one area at a time, bringing us into greater agreement with God’s truth. Our thinking begins to change. Our responses begin to change. The direction of our lives begins to change. Little by little, Jesus Christ transforms us from the inside out, making us more like Himself and preparing us to walk in the abundant life He came to give.
Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”

QUESTIONS THAT LEAD TO TRANSFORMATION
Every healing journey begins with honest questions. The Holy Spirit brings truth, wisdom, revelation, and understanding as we surrender the inward places of our lives to Jesus Christ.
WHERE HEALING BEGINS

GOD HEALS WHAT HURTS
No matter how long you’ve carried the weight of what hurt you, Jesus Christ is still able to bring healing, restoration, renewal, and peace. God is still able to restore what life tried to break, and your pain does not get the final say.
