Spiritually Preparing for Marriage begins with Christ
Many people spend years praying for a spouse, imagining married life, or wondering when God will answer their prayers. Yet Scripture reminds us that God's greatest work often begins long before we enter the blessings we desire. Before He prepares us for marriage, He prepares us to walk faithfully with Jesus Christ.
Marriage is one of God's most sacred covenants. It deserves more than excitement or good intentions. It calls for spiritual maturity, humility, wisdom, forgiveness, and a heart that continues to grow in Christ. As you explore these teachings, allow God to prepare you not only for marriage but also for the life of faith He has called you to live.
"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have--Jesus Christ."
1 CORINTHIANS 3:11 (NLT)
Before You Prepare for a Person, Prepare to Walk With God
A healthy marriage begins with two people who are learning to follow Christ before they follow each other. No relationship can replace your personal walk with God, and no spouse can become the source of the peace, identity, or security that only Jesus Christ provides.
As your relationship with God grows stronger, He begins shaping your character, renewing your thinking, strengthening your discernment, and preparing your heart to love according to His design. The closer we walk with Christ, the better equipped we become to recognize His direction and build relationships that honor Him.

What Does It Mean to Prepare?
Preparing for marriage involves much more than planning for a future wedding. God desires to prepare every area of our lives so we can enter marriage with wisdom, spiritual stability, and a heart that reflects His love. These areas provide a foundation for that journey.

Prepare to Love and Partner Well

The Work God Does Before Marriage
Before God joins two lives together, He often prepares each heart individually. As we surrender our lives to Christ, He strengthens our foundation, brings healing where it is needed, develops our character, sharpens our discernment, and teaches us what it means to enter the covenant of marriage according to His design.

1
Your Foundation
in Christ
Before we build a life with someone else, God calls us to build our lives on Jesus Christ. Every healthy marriage begins with a strong spiritual foundation.
In this stage of preparation, God teaches us to:
-
Find our identity in Jesus Christ.
-
Trust His Will above our own.
-
Walk in obedience even when His plans differ from our own.
-
Depend on Him through prayer.
-
Build our lives on His truth.

2
Healing and Surrender
God desires to heal the places in our hearts that can influence how we love, trust, communicate, and receive love. Healing prepares us to enter marriage with greater freedom.
Invite God to teach you to :
-
Recognize unhealthy relationship patterns.
-
Surrender past hurts to Him.
-
Practice biblical forgiveness.
-
Replace fear with trust.
-
Allow Him to restore what has been broken.

3
Character and Spiritual Maturity
Marriage is strengthened when both individuals continue becoming more like Christ. Spiritual maturity produces humility, faithfulness, wisdom, and self-control.
Invite God to teach you to :
-
Grow in Christlike character.
-
Develop emotional and spiritual maturity.
-
Practice self-control.
-
Receive correction with humility.
-
Respond to conflict in healthy ways.

4
Discernment in Relationships
Not every relationship is God's best. Discernment helps us recognize His direction and make wise decisions that honor Him.
Invite God to teach you to :
-
Evaluate relationships biblically.
-
Recognize healthy and unhealthy patterns.
-
Distinguish chemistry from God's confirmation.
-
Identify godly character.
-
Develop a pattern of seeking His wisdom before making lifelong commitments.

5
Preparing for Covenant Partnership
Marriage is a lifelong covenant designed by God. As He prepares us, He teaches us how to love, serve, communicate, and build a life together that glorifies Him.
Invite God to teach you to :
-
Understand His purpose for marriage.
-
Serve with humility and love.
-
Communicate with grace and truth.
-
Practice faithful stewardship together.
-
Build a Christ-centered partnership.
Before You Ask, "When Will I Get Married?"
Surrender to the Work God Wants to Do in You
It is natural to wonder when God will bring the person He has prepared for you. Before focusing on the timing of marriage, allow Him to prepare your heart. Every season of waiting is an opportunity to grow in faith, surrender, wisdom, and spiritual maturity.
Take a few moments to prayerfully reflect on these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the areas where He desires to continue His work within you.

Waiting Is Also Part of the Preparation

Waiting is one of the hardest parts of preparing for marriage because it often raises questions we cannot answer. We may wonder why God hasn't brought the right person into our lives, whether we have missed His Will, or if marriage will ever become part of our future. Those questions are real, but they do not have to become the focus of our hearts.
Waiting is not a season of inactivity. It is a season in which God continues to strengthen our faith, deepen our trust, and prepare us in ways we may not yet recognize. As we keep our eyes on Jesus Christ instead of the calendar, we learn that no season surrendered to Him is ever wasted. Whether marriage comes sooner, later, or not in the way we expected, God's purpose is always to draw us closer to Himself and continue the good work He has begun within us.
Dating with Wisdom
Dating should be more than discovering whether two people enjoy spending time together. For followers of Jesus Christ, it is an opportunity to prayerfully discern whether a relationship is leading both individuals toward the future God desires for them. Healthy relationships are built on honesty, shared faith, mutual respect, and a willingness to seek God's direction together rather than simply following emotions or personal desires.
As you get to know someone, pay attention to more than attraction or compatibility. Observe character over time. Listen carefully to how they speak, how they treat others, how they respond to correction, and whether their relationship with Christ is evident in the way they live. Seek God's wisdom, establish healthy boundaries, and never ignore what the Holy Spirit may be revealing. A relationship that honors God should continually encourage both people to grow closer to Him.

thank You for preparing me according to Your perfect Will. Continue to shape my heart, strengthen my faith, and make me more like Jesus Christ each day. Reveal the areas where I need healing, forgiveness, wisdom, and spiritual growth, and teach me to trust Your timing above my own. Whether I am waiting, dating, or preparing for marriage, help me to honor You in every decision I make. If marriage is part of Your plan for my life, prepare me to enter that covenant with humility, faithfulness, and a heart fully surrendered to You. Above all, may my greatest desire always be to know You, follow You, and glorify You.
In the powerful and precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
