What's Shaping You?

What is forming the person you are becoming ?

A Soul Work teaching on recognizing the influences that shape

our thoughts, beliefs, responses, and walk with Jesus Christ.

Shaping Happens Gradually.

When people think about change, they often picture something dramatic—a breakthrough, a crisis, a life-altering decision, or a defining moment. But much of the shaping that takes place within us doesn’t happen all at once. It happens through the ordinary experiences of everyday life—one thought at a time, one experience at a time, and one repeated response at a time.

Like water slowly carving through solid rock or the roots of a tree stretching deeper beneath the surface, shaping is usually gradual. Day after day, our thoughts, beliefs, experiences, and choices are forming the person we are becoming. Most of the time we don’t even notice it happening until we discover ourselves responding in ways we never expected. By then, something has already been growing beneath the surface.

What's shaping me?"

It’s a simple question, yet it may be one of the most important questions you’ll ever ask yourself.

Most of us spend our lives paying attention to what we’re doing. We think about our responsibilities, our relationships, our finances, our health, and the endless list of things competing for our attention each day. We focus on the decisions we need to make, the problems we need to solve, and the goals we’re trying to reach. But far fewer of us stop long enough to ask a much deeper question:

Every influence

leaves its mark.

Every day we become

a little more like what

we allow to shape us.

When we ask, “What’s shaping you?” we’re really asking, “What is forming the person you are becoming?” Whether we realize it or not, every one of us is being shaped. The conversations we have, the disappointments we endure, the people we admire, the fears we entertain, the habits we practice, and the voices we continually listen to all exert an influence on our lives.

They don’t simply pass through and disappear. Little by little, they shape the way we think, what we believe, what we value, how we respond to life’s circumstances, how we relate to other people, and even how we see and respond to God.

Whether those influences are leading us toward truth or away from it, they are continually leaving their fingerprints on our souls and forming the people we are becoming.

Your Soul Is Always Responding.

Throughout our lives, our souls are continually responding to the people, experiences, and influences around us. Fear can shape us. Bitterness can shape us. Rejection, disappointment, success, failure, unhealthy relationships, painful experiences, and even the conversations we have with ourselves all have the power to leave an imprint upon our inner lives. Over time, they influence what we believe, how we respond, and ultimately the person we are becoming.

Some influences gradually conform us to the image of Jesus Christ. Others slowly draw our hearts away from Him. That is why Soul Work matters. It isn’t merely about changing behavior. It’s about recognizing what has been shaping our hearts all along and allowing God’s truth to transform us from the inside out.

Luke 6:45 (NLT)

"A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart."

In other words, what fills the heart eventually directs the life. Long before our actions become visible, something has already been shaping the person within.

Who Is Doing the Shaping?

None of us are exempt from this process. Every person is being formed by something. The real question is not whether we’re being shaped, but who—or what—is doing the shaping.

Are we being shaped by …

  • Culture and the values of the world

  • Social media and the voices we consume

  • Past wounds and unresolved pain

  • Rejection, fear, and insecurity

  • The opinions and approval of others

OR

Or are we being shaped by …

  • God's Word and the truth of Scripture

  • The Holy Spirit who lives in us

  • The finished work of Jesus Christ

  • God's love, grace, and truth

  • Fellowship with God through prayer

That question changes everything, because whatever consistently shapes our hearts will eventually shape our lives.

Why This Matters

Many people spend years trying to change their behavior without ever addressing what has been shaping their soul. They try harder, pray harder, hide their struggles better, or simply hope things will improve with time. Yet the same patterns continue returning because the deeper influence has never been confronted.

Behavior is often the fruit.
Shaping is often the root.

Jesus Christ never came merely to improve outward behavior. He came to make us new. Through His death and resurrection, He made it possible for our hearts and minds to be transformed so that our lives would increasingly reflect His character.

That transformation begins within, through the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11 NLT), and it gradually becomes evident on the outside.

This Is the Heart of Soul Work

1

Throughout this website you’ll see one question repeated again and again:

What’s shaping you?

That question is an invitation to stop long enough to consider what has been forming the person you’re becoming. It’s an opportunity to look beyond the outward struggles and ask what has been influencing your thoughts, beliefs, responses, and relationship with God all along. Because until we recognize what’s been shaping us, we’ll often continue addressing the symptoms while leaving the root untouched.

This is what Soul Work is all about. As the Holy Spirit shines the light of God’s truth into our hearts, He helps us recognize the beliefs, conclusions, and patterns that have taken root over the years. Some have drawn us closer to Jesus Christ. Others have kept us living beneath the freedom He purchased for us through the cross. Only God knows every part of our inner life, and only He knows how to bring lasting healing and transformation.

As you work through these Soul Work studies, don’t rush past the question, “What’s shaping me?” Bring it before the Lord in humility and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what has been influencing your life—for good and for harm. As He brings those things to light, respond to Him with an open heart. Allow Him to renew your mind through His Word, strengthen your faith, and continue conforming you to the image of Jesus Christ

Because the person you become tomorrow is being shaped by what is forming you today.

Our prayer is that, more and more, the One shaping your life will be Jesus Christ.

Where You Go From Here

You don’t have to leave this page the same.

Whatever came to your mind as you walked through this—that’s where your healing begins.

Not by ignoring it.
Not by pushing past it.

But by allowing God to meet you in it and bring truth into that place.

Continue your journey. There's more for you here.
