Relationship Discernment

Learning to seek God’s wisdom, recognize what honors Him, and discern whether a relationship

belongs in the future He has for you.

Discernment Matters Before Commitment

Just because a relationship feels good doesn’t necessarily mean it is good for us. And that’s something we sometimes have a hard time admitting, especially when we genuinely care about the person. Somebody can make us laugh, make us feel seen, treat us well, and bring a lot of happiness into our lives, and we can still need to step back and ask, “Lord, is this really where You want me?” Caring about somebody and being called to build a life with them are two different things. Feelings can tell us that we are attracted, comfortable, excited, or emotionally invested. They cannot, by themselves, tell us whether a relationship is wise or whether it fits within God’s Will for our lives.

This is why discernment needs to happen before commitment, not after we have already made up our minds. Because once our hearts get deeply involved, it becomes much harder to be honest with ourselves. We start explaining things away. We overlook things we probably would have noticed in the beginning. We may even find ourselves praying for God to give us the answer we already want instead of genuinely asking Him what He wants. And let's be honest, sometimes we don't really want discernment. We want confirmation. We want God to say yes to the person we already like. We want God to bless the future we've already imagined and the relationship we've already become emotionally attached to, regardless of whether it aligns with His plan for us. But that's not surrender. If we're going to ask God to lead us, we have to be willing for His answer to be different from ours.

Discernment doesn't mean looking for reasons to reject someone or assuming every relationship has a hidden problem. It means being willing to slow down long enough to see the relationship for what it actually is, not just what we hope it will become. Before we give somebody our heart, our future, and eventually our commitment, we need to pay attention to character, values, spiritual maturity, how conflict is handled, how we are treated, and whether the relationship is helping us move toward God or pulling us somewhere else. Love matters, but love by itself isn't enough to build a healthy marriage. We need wisdom, too. And sometimes the most loving thing we can do for ourselves is stop asking, “How much do I like this person?” and start asking, “What am I seeing, and what is God showing me?”

What Are You Looking At?

When we really like someone, it can be easy to focus on how the relationship makes us feel. But discernment asks us to look deeper. Godly relationships aren't built on attraction and chemistry alone. We need to pay attention to what is actually in front of us. Character, spiritual fruit, direction, and wisdom can tell us things our emotions may not always want to hear.

Character

Who is this person when no one is watching? Pay attention to honesty, humility, integrity, responsibility, and how they treat people who can do nothing for them. Character will eventually show up in a relationship, because nobody can maintain their best behavior forever.

Spiritual Fruit

Don't look only at what someone says about God. Look for evidence of His work in their life. Are love, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control becoming visible in how they live and how they treat you? Spiritual maturity is more than knowing Scripture or going to church.

Direction

Ask yourself where this relationship is taking you. Are you growing closer to Jesus Christ, becoming stronger spiritually, and living more obediently? Or are you compromising things you once believed were important? A relationship can feel wonderful and still be moving you in the wrong direction.

Wisdom

We need God's wisdom because our emotions don't always give us an accurate picture. Bring the relationship before Him in prayer. Search His Word. Listen to the Holy Spirit, and don't automatically dismiss wise counsel simply because it isn't what you hoped to hear.
